Why credibility is important!

The internet is great for research… if you know how to use it properly! You have to use the right keywords and it may be trial and error before you find them. Be aware that the first couple of listed results in a Google search are more than likely to be paid advertisements and may not be quite what you’re looking for. Here are some other tips and tricks for getting the most out of your Google search.

It’s also important to remember that not all information sources are equal in authority and not everything you read online is true. Carefully consider these points:

  • Is it a well-known and respected media outlet or an academic journal?
  • Is it an objective news article or an opinion piece?
  • Does the website address end in .org (nonprofit), .gov (government) or .edu (education institution)?
  • Did you find the source through your own independent search or did someone (with a particular viewpoint) share it with you? (Not that there’s anything wrong with that! But just be aware of what people’s motives are.)

Be sure to verify that the source is credible and validate that the information is accurate before you share it.
